How Wandrealm is built, and what we learn along the way.

Syncing time of day and weather across a realm
Hogwarts Legacy is a single-player game, and its clock, weather and quests are written with that in mind. In 0.3.18 we added a shared world clock: everyone in a realm sees the same time of day and the same type of weather. This post covers how we designed it, what we ran into while building it, what went wrong in the first days on sandbox, and what changes in 0.3.20.

Open-world PvP is here: flag yourself to fight other flagged players, earn ranks and show them on your nameplate. Houses fight as sides: your own house can't hurt you.
Version 0.3.169 ·
A new PvP season starts today and runs until the end of November. Duels feel better, with clearer limits on shields and dodges and a steadier fight from start to finish. There is now a Wandrealm menu in the game, with your PvP progress, and the launcher has a page for choosing Wandrealm's keys. Many combat and party fixes make fights and groups more reliable. The website has a fresh new look. On Epic, if the launcher can't start the game by itself, it now waits for you to press Launch in the Epic Games Launcher. This update is required: older launchers can't join the realm once it is out. Known limits: ranks and PvP points are new, so tell us if something looks off. On Epic the in-game menu uses the game's standard look for now. The House Cup switches on a little later.
Fixed Epic Games installs where Play could not start the game. If Wandrealm can't start it for you, it now asks you to press Launch in the Epic Games Launcher and waits for the game.
Version 0.3.164 ·
Wandrealm 0.3.150: other players' looks and a steadier connection
Version 0.3.150 ·
Fixes
- Mod textures on other players, like skin and face details, now load in shortly after they appear, instead of being left out. Some colour differences may remain.
- If saving is cut short by a poor connection, the launcher now tries again instead of ending your session.
- Enemies already defeated in the realm stay down when you log in, even when the realm is slow to answer.
- Smaller fixes and stability improvements.
Wandrealm 0.3.132: riding together and getting into your realm
Version 0.3.132 ·
Fixes
- Riding a hippogriff or graphorn no longer makes the game lose track of your character: other players see you move, and you see them.
- Wand clash callouts stay up for the whole clash.
- If the game restarts while you're joining, the launcher now gets you back in.
- If you need to copy a save by hand, the launcher now shows a clear screen with reminders.
- If joining goes quiet for a long time, you now get a notice.
Wandrealm 0.3.125: fewer crashes and falling players
Version 0.3.125 ·
Fixes
- Fixed a game crash in shared fights when Accio pulled an enemy.
- Other players no longer fall through the world when the ground under them hasn't loaded in your game yet.
Changes
- Outfit textures from any mod now show for other players who have the same mod.
Also
- Smaller fixes and stability improvements.
Wandrealm 0.3.100: quests after fast travel, duels and enemies
Version 0.3.100 ·
Fixes
- Abandoning a quest after fast travel works again.
- Duels: Transformation spells are blocked more firmly, so they can no longer crash the game.
- The launcher no longer shows a false warning about where your saves are kept.
Changes
- Enemies now fight every player near them, not only the one who hit them first.
Also
- Smaller fixes and stability improvements.
Wandrealm 0.3.96: fixes for disappearing players, abandoned missions and duels
Version 0.3.96 ·
Fixes
- Other players no longer fall through the world and vanish when the ground under them hasn't loaded in your game yet. They now stay where they really are and land properly once the ground loads.
- Abandoning a story mission that was already running when you joined no longer disconnects you. The game keeps you in the session and tells you why it can't be abandoned there.
- Joining no longer stalls for up to a second on slower PCs.
- A hand-over that loads twice no longer races the game's loading.
- Players with both Steam and Epic saves on one PC can press Play again: Wandrealm now picks the saves of the store you're running.
- If your newest save was made by an older version of Hogwarts Legacy, the launcher now tells you how to fix it (load it once in the game, save, then press Play again).
- After a failed import, you're reminded in game that your progress isn't being saved.
- Enemy knockbacks seen from another player's game no longer point far away.
- Duels: Transformation spells are no longer allowed (they could crash the game), and Imperius is now properly blocked like the other Unforgivables.
Also
- Support logs now list the game's own Mods folder, to help find why some players can't get in.
Shared combat and duels are here.
Version 0.3.79 ·
New
- Fight together: enemies, their attacks, hits and reactions are now shared between the players in a realm. When you fight next to someone, you both see the same enemies and the same fight.
- Duels: challenge another player to a friendly 1v1 duel. Nobody dies; the result is announced in the realm.
- Spells aimed at enemies now land the same way for everyone watching.
- Epic Games Store players get shared combat too (new: please send your logs if a fight looks wrong).
- This update is required.
Known limits
- Quest enemies may come back after you cleared them.
- Random world events may differ between players.
- Enemy copies can look stiff while they attack or react to hits.
- Combat sync on the Epic Games Store version is new; tell us if something looks wrong.
Fixed: characters you played with official (CurseForge) mods can now be brought into Wandrealm. They are marked 'made with mods', since mods may not be compatible.
Version 0.3.71 ·
Production 0.3.62 — Parties
Version 0.3.62 ·
This update is required: older launchers can't join until they update.
New: parties of up to 6 players
- Invite a player near you, or by name from chat. Accept with F7, decline with F8.
- Party frames show each member's name, level and health. Party members also get name plates, and they show on the minimap, the HUD and the world map.
- Party chat: type /p <message>.
- Members who open the map stay in the party.
Chat
- Chat has been updated for party chat. Press Enter to open the chat box whenever you are on the realm.
Fixes
- After a long time on the world map or a loading screen, you could come back "connected" but frozen and invisible until you restarted. The game now notices within about 10 seconds and rejoins.
- Rejoining after a long loading screen (for example a fast-travel load) could fail with another disconnect. It now rejoins cleanly.
- Other players' clothes and looks could freeze or fail to appear. They are now found reliably.
- Party name plates no longer show an empty health bar.
- The party marker arrow is smaller.
Known limits
- Parties live in memory, so a realm restart ends every party. You get a notice before restarts.
- While a member has the map open, they vanish for others and their voice drops. They stay in the party.
- World-map markers show where members were when you opened the map; they don't move while it is open.
- There are no world-map markers on the Hogwarts map yet, and no minimap markers in Hogsmeade village or in dungeons.
- No shared kill credit or loot rules yet. Those come with combat.
Production 0.3.49 — reliable Play loading
Version 0.3.49 ·
Fixes
- Pressing Play could sometimes load an older save of your character instead of your latest progress, and the game then told you it could not load the character Wandrealm prepared. The game now waits until your latest save is ready before loading it.
Shared doors: a door one player unlocks is unlocked for everyone on the realm.
Version 0.3.48 ·
New:
- When you unlock a door with Alohomora, in the open world or in the castle, other players on the realm see it unlocked too, and players who join later get it as well.
- A door above your Alohomora level stays locked for you until you reach that level.
- Double doors and door groups unlock together.
Not shared (known limits):
- Doors swinging open are not sent: another player may walk through a door that still looks locked on your screen.
- Quest doors, house common-room doors and key doors stay personal.
- Five doors in the Defence Against the Dark Arts archive may be placed wrongly; they are not locked, so no unlock is lost.
Fixes getting stuck when entering the world right after the game starts: the game now waits until its main menu is ready.
Version 0.3.43 ·
Wandrealm 0.3.40 — shared objects, Abandon Mission fixed, automatic logs
Version 0.3.40 ·
New
- Smashed crates and barrels break for everyone and stay broken for 30 minutes, even across realm restarts.
- Objects you lift, throw, push or pull with Wingardium Leviosa, Levioso, Accio or Depulso move for everyone nearby, and land where the caster put them.
- Other players' spells look and sound right: the right spell, the right incantation, and no purple glow left on their wands.
- When something goes wrong in a game, the launcher sends us its logs and the mod's logs automatically, and also after about half of normal games, so we can find and fix problems. You are asked once, and you can turn it off at any time in Settings. Send logs still works as before.
- Voice chat: before you turn it on, the launcher asks you to accept the voice rules. Players in the speaking list show a short tag after their name.
Fixes
- Abandon Mission keeps you in the realm, from the quest log and from the mission-failed screen.
- If you quit during a story mission, you start it again from the beginning the next time you press Play.
- Chat connects right away when you enter the world.
Wandrealm 0.3.33 — a portable launcher
Version 0.3.33 ·
New
- The launcher also comes as a zip you can extract to any folder and run, with no installer. It updates itself.
- Adds connection diagnostics, to help us find join problems faster.
Wandrealm 0.3.32 — Try Again fixed, a crash fixed
Version 0.3.32 ·
Fixes
- Try Again on the death or mission-failed screen keeps you in your Wandrealm session again, now without the lag 0.3.30 had.
- Load Game is hidden on the death screen while you play in Wandrealm.
- Fixes a crash that could happen when another player's outfit or hood changed nearby.
Known limits
- Abandon Mission still returns you to the main menu: press Play to continue.
Wandrealm 0.3.31 — fixes heavy lag
Version 0.3.31 ·
Fixes
- Fixes the heavy lag (around 10 FPS) that 0.3.30 caused for everyone.
Known limits
- Try Again on the death or mission-failed screen disconnects you again for now, as before 0.3.30: press Play to continue. A fix that doesn't cost frames comes in the next update.
Fixes being disconnected after pressing Try Again on the death or mission-failed screen, and hides Load Game during a Wandrealm session. Abandon Mission still returns you to the main menu; press Play to continue.
Version 0.3.30 ·
Wandrealm 0.3.29 — shared time, shared camps and voice chat
Version 0.3.29 ·
The biggest update yet: the world is now shared. Everyone on a realm sees the same time of day and weather, cleared enemy camps stay cleared for everyone, and you can talk to nearby players. Update the launcher when it asks: this update is required.
New
- Shared time of day and weather: everyone on a realm sees the same sky. Quests that need a certain time of day still work.
- Shared enemy camps: clear a bandit camp, poacher patrol or other camp with friends and it stays cleared for everyone until it respawns. Players nearby see the enemies fall live. Loot goes to the players who helped. Quest and named enemies stay your own.
- Proximity voice chat: talk to players near you in game. Turn it on in the launcher's Voice page; push-to-talk on V by default, with mute, block and per-player volume.
- You now only see players who are in the same place as you: no more players floating in the air while you're inside a dungeon or Hogwarts.
- Wandrealm support can now move a stuck character for you and send you a personal message in game: ask on Discord.
Fixes
- Kills the server can't share are now recorded in your logs, so support can see what happened.
Known limits
- Creatures and world-event enemies aren't shared yet.
- A cleared camp comes back after 5 minutes.
0.3.28 — your character loads where it was saved
Version 0.3.28 ·
Joining a realm now puts your character where its Wandrealm save was made, not where you last stood on this PC.
Fixes
- After a reload or a restore, quests, doors and companions match where you stand again, so you no longer load in with a quest's scene missing.
- If the game loads a different save while joining, the join stops with a message instead of uploading the wrong save.
Keeps your progress safe: loading a save from the pause menu is blocked while you play in Wandrealm; if the game ever stops saving to Wandrealm you see a warning and get reminders; and Play backs up newer local saves before replacing them.
Version 0.3.23 ·
Wandrealm 0.3.17 — dodge and sprint diagnostics
Version 0.3.17 ·
If you ever can't dodge or your sprint runs at walking pace, send your logs from the launcher: the game now records which of its movement locks was on, so we can find and fix the cause.
Wandrealm 0.3.16 — smoother mounts on the ground, better support
Version 0.3.16 ·
Other players' graphorns and hippogriffs now trot when their rider trots and gallop when they gallop, instead of running all the time. New players no longer see "Connection lost" right after bringing in their character, and chat works from their first session. Update the launcher when it asks: this update is required.
New
- Another player's mount on the ground shows the gait they really ride: walk, trot or gallop, including after a gallop landing.
- New players: no more "Connection lost" right after Bring Character, and chat works straight away.
- The update screen shows the notes of every release you skipped.
- Wandrealm support can now rename your character for you: ask on Discord.
Fixes
- If you rename your character with another mod, Wandrealm stops saving with a clear message instead of disconnecting you, and goes on as soon as the name matches again.
- Loading another character's save while on Wandrealm now says so clearly.
- After a crash, the launcher waits for programs that still hold its files instead of failing with "Access is denied".
- The launcher reminds you if your Wandrealm session has ended while the game is still running.
- Clearer messages when the server refuses a save.
Support logs
- Logs sent to support now also include the mod's own report, the game's crash summary, the previous game log, a list of crash dumps, your PC and graphics settings, and the names of other mods you run. The privacy page lists everything that is sent.
Known limits
- Another player who is in a different dungeon can show up inside yours. A fix is planned.
- A short stutter can still happen the moment another player's mount appears.
Wandrealm 0.3.15 — crash fix
Version 0.3.15 ·
A fix for a crash some players hit after a loading screen. Update the launcher when it asks: this update is required.
Fixes
- The game no longer crashes when another player who is already flying a broom appears near you and their broom changes, for example right after a loading screen.
- Another player who lands right after their broom changed now stands on the ground instead of hanging in the air.
Wandrealm 0.3.14 — mounts, hippogriffs and a new multiplayer engine
Version 0.3.14 ·
Other players now see you ride your graphorn and your hippogriff, and the game runs on a new multiplayer engine. Update the launcher when it asks: older launchers and games can no longer join.
Hippogriffs
- The Highwing and the Onyx hippogriff, each in its owner's colours and with the right voice. More mounts, like the thestral, come later.
- Switching mounts mid-session works: other players see the new mount.
Graphorns
- Other players see you ride your graphorn, and several riders can be around you at once.
A new multiplayer engine
- The game runs on a new realm protocol. Movement, on foot and on brooms, is rebuilt for smoother sync and many more players per realm.
- Other players' looks and names arrive faster and more reliably. A player is drawn only once their look has arrived, so no more default bodies.
- Reconnecting is cleaner: your new session takes over from the old one instead of leaving a duplicate behind.
Gameplay sync
- You see other players crouch while they sneak.
- Disillusionment: you see another player turn see-through, also when you arrive later, and their cast no longer forces you into a crouch.
- Other players stay visible even when you run other mods that hook the player.
Launcher
- Having trouble? Send your logs to support from Settings, from problem notices and from Bring Character, and share the code it shows on Discord. Personal details like your Windows user name are removed first, and the privacy page explains what the logs contain and how long they are kept.
Known limits
- A short stutter can happen the moment another player's mount appears.
- If two hippogriff riders appear at the same moment, the second shows up about a second later.
- The Onyx's gallop landing may shake your camera slightly when another player lands nearby. A fix is planned.
Wandrealm 0.3.10 — messages from Wandrealm
Version 0.3.10 ·
New
- Messages from the Wandrealm team appear in chat as gold lines starting with ◆ Wandrealm; urgent ones also show on the game's notice banner.
- Before the realm restarts for an update you get a warning with a countdown, and the disconnect that follows says the realm is restarting instead of "connection lost". You are reconnected when it is back.
Fixes
- No player can chat under the name Wandrealm.
Wandrealm 0.3.8 — smoother crowds
Version 0.3.8 ·
Fixes
- No more freezes every few seconds near players whose outfit kept changing: outfits are sent once they settle, and other players' outfits are put on at most every 10 seconds.
- Other players no longer stand still for up to 3 seconds after a cast while they walk on.
- A character not yet sorted into a house is refused at once, with a message, instead of failing to load after 3 minutes.
Improved
- Better diagnostics for loading problems, snapping players and slow movement.
Wandrealm 0.3.7 — realm chat and held spells
Version 0.3.7 ·
New
- Realm chat: press Enter in game to open chat, Enter to send, Escape to close. Lines show the character names above players' heads.
- Other players see your Lumos light and your Protego shield for as long as you hold them.
Fixes
- Outdated games are refused cleanly instead of hanging on "connecting".
Everyone needs 0.3.7 to play. The launcher updates itself.
Wandrealm 0.3.3
Version 0.3.3 ·
Improved save detection for Steam and Epic Games Store. Save errors now explain what failed, with Retry and a privacy-safe support report. Compatible Epic save build metadata is accepted without relaxing save validation.
